Irwinton

City of Irwinton, Georgia cityhall

Irwinton was named for former Georgia governor, Jared Irwin and currently serves as the county seat for Wilkinson County. Irwinton was incorporated in 1904, but has history dating back to the Civil War. The first courthouse and brick school were burned by General Sherman's army as they were on their famous 'March to the Sea' campaign during the Civil War. Currently, the population of Irwinton is approximately seven hundred. Four of Wilkinson County's other cities (Ivey, Gordon, Toomsboro, and McIntyre) are located within about fifteen miles from Irwinton.
